Public Domain Superheroes #1 - Blue Bolt

Originally posted here
Hi guys. Lets look at something I think you all need to see more of: public domain superheroes. These characters all had stories already made, and are literally waiting for you, right now, to use them how you see fit. Use them for inspiration! Use them for original stories! Just don't let them be forgotten. And even if it's not required, maybe give a nod to the nice folks who made them originally, back in the day.
Also, if you like this series, reblog it! What's the point of telling folks about the Public Domain Superheroes is nobody reads about them?
So to start this series, we have a personal favorite of mine, Blue Bolt.

Real Name:Fred Parrish
Creator:Joe Simon
Notable Artists:Jack Kirby did some early work on his book!
First Published In:Blue Bolt Comics V1 #1 in 1940
Publisher: Novelty Press
The Blue Bolt has a bit of a grizzly origin: Fred Parrish, a football player at Harvard, is playing ball with two of his friends, when suddenly a storm appears. They run for cover but all get struck by lightning. Only Fred survives. He gets to his plane to try to fly for help (real smart, Fred), and ends up getting struck by lightning again and crashing and burning into the big hard thing below him. I believe falling whales call it ground.
Dr. Bertoff finds him and drags him to his subterranean lab. Because that's not creepy at all. Dr. Bertoff exposes him to radium, and it somehow allows Fred to use the lightning now stored in and made by his body. He uses a gun shaped device to aim it better, and he can also fly now. He goes off to fight the Green Sorceress and her ally Marto (who looks an awful lot like a certain mental organism that was designed only for something...) and wins. When he returned, he learned how to shoot the lightning from his eyes, and teamed up with Lois Blake, who somehow also got his powers and proved that Joe Simon knew a total of two women's names. He goes and fights crime and supervillains from then on.
What really sells me on Blue Bolt? He comes with built in SHIPS. You could ship him with Lois, sure... but the Green Sorceress also has a thing for him after he defeats her! So go ahead, use these characters in a comic, and let Tumblr start it's traditional shipping wars.
Of course, if you want to use Blue Bolt with the whole cast, you'll also want to use

The Green Sorceress, who had an array of magical abilities aside from being an alien chick that Captain James Tiberius Kirk may want to get to know better. She was mostly seen turning into mist and back, and she was horribly jealous of Lois because of Fred. Oh, and for some reason she teamed up with Hitler for a while. I don't know why. She later changed her mind.

Lois Blake, who I cannot seem to find any images of her in a costume of any sort. Tumblr, make me proud! I know you can design one for her!

Dr. Bertoff, who... wow, I didn't know how Supervillainy he looked. He's either evil or thought he was Sean Connery 70 years early. Wow. Anyway, I think he's a little creepy, but use him however you want.

And here we have Marto, the Mental Associate Recognized That One time. Okay, that acronym fell apart. The dude is MODOK's prototype! And he's on a wheel! I think Blue Bolt just flipped him on his back like a tortoise!
He actually acts more like Hector Hammond; he wants to be handsome, like Blue Bolt, to woo the Green Sorceress. I swear, if the shipping gets any worse, someone's going to have an identical twin with an eyepatch and a medical degree. He seems to have psychic powers, and a hard time understanding there is a reason unicycles suck.
Anyway, there you have it, the first episode of Alchemyprime Blogs About Public Domain Superheroes. Thanks a bunch to the PDSH Wiki and I'll be back next time with another hero you cna do whatever with without being sued!

  1. Awesome page and post here! I've been doing a lot of research on Blue Bolt and Green Sorceress for our webcomic The Not So Golden Age. We've taken lots of public domain heroes and thrown them into a retirement trailer park in Reno, NV. It's pretty funny. I'm writing the script for issue 2 right now which includes some ridiculous events between Blue Bolt and Green Sorceress. If you're interested, check it out at www.notsogolden.com
